Gonzo's Quest Megaways Introduction

Gonzo's Quest, one of NetEnt's most popular games and the first to feature cascading symbols, gets a sequel in the shape of Gonzo's Quest Megaways. With Red Tiger Gaming over development the primary addition here is, of course, the Megaways engine. This brings more symbols across a varying number of rows, allowing for a total of 117,649 paylines! The cascading symbols add to a multiplier through the Avalanche feature, while the indestructible wilds remain in place even as they participate in paylines. Look out for earthquakes, these will destroy all low-paying symbols on the reels!

The protagonist of the Gonzo's Quest series is based on Gonzalo Pizarro y Alonso, the Spanish conquistador who, in 1541, decided to seek out of a fabulously rich native kingdom in the East of South America. Some described a golden city dubbed El Dorado; other called it "Pais de la Candela," the Land of Cinnamon. Whatever the name of this mythical land Gonzalo tried, but failed, to find it. If only he could have settled down for a game of Gonzo's Quest Megaways instead!

Gonzo's Quest Megaways Game Features

Gonzo's Quest Megaways plays quite similarly to the original, but in case you are either not familiar or need a refresher, here's an introduction. The game takes place across 6 reels (up from 5 in the first) and requires matching 3 or more identical adjacent symbols, starting from reel 1 and moving from left to right. However, whereas the first Gonzo's Quest had 20 paylines, Megaways increases their amount to 117,649. This is due to the reels carrying anything from 2 to 7 symbols at any time. Symbols making part of winning paylines disappear, and new ones cascade to replace them. Should the cascade result in a successful payline the process repeats, until there are no more winning combinations. Red Tiger Gaming dubs this feature Avalanche, and it adds +1 to a multiplier, up to a maximum of 5x.

The one exception to destructible symbols is the wild. Represented by a golden "?" symbol, the indestructible wilds remain on the reels even after forming a payline, adding to the potential of more wins. These wilds can substitute for any symbol, even the golden scatters! You can land 2 wilds on the same spin, one on reels 1-3 and the other on reels 4-6.

Gonzo's Quest Megaways Free Spins and bonuses

Note the shiny golden symbols on the reels of Gonzo's Quest Megaways since these are the scatters. Also known as the Free Fall symbols, these award you free spins if you manage to hit 3 or more - or 2 plus a wild. You earn 9 free spins if you get 3 Free Fall symbols (or 2 and a wild), and each additional scatter adds 3 more free spins! During free spins the Avalanche multipliers are increased to 3x, 6x, 9x and 15x, and you can win additional free spins if you manage to hit 3 or more Free Fall symbols.

Another bonus feature is the Earthquake. This can happen randomly during any spin to destroy all the low-paying symbols on the reels. It also only allows high-paying symbols to drop down and replace them, increasing the potential for some big wins!

Gonzo's Quest Megaways Payouts

Gonzo's Quest Megaways can lead to winnings reaching 21,000x your initial stake through the combination of increased free spins multipliers and the Megaways engine, at least according the developer. When it comes to the value of the various symbols, the black faces are the highest-paying at a maximum 15x of your initial bet, followed by the blue at 4x, the green at 2x, the brown at 1.2x and the gray at 1x. On the low-pay side are the faces in profile, starting from the pale green at 0.8x, the brown at 0.7x, the pink at 0.6x and the pale gray at 0.5x.

Gonzo's Quest Megaways Graphics and Sound

The original Gonzo's Quest is still one of the best-looking slots around, and Gonzo's Quest Megaways only ups the ante further by going bigger and better. The setting, inspired by the temples left by the various ancient civilisations of South America, is beautifully realised down to the different carved figures making the symbols. Then there's Gonzo himself on the lower left corner of the screen. He's wonderfully animated, and always eager to get his share of the golden coins scattered when you get a big win! A tribal drum soundtrack plays in the background, and if you listen closely you can listen to the various creatures living in the surrounding jungle.

Gonzo's Quest Megaways Conclusion

Megaways seems to be the way to go for current big slots, and NetEnt and Red Tiger Gaming do it right in Gonzo's Quest Megaways. The existing cascade mechanic from the first Gonzo's Quest meshes wonderfully with the Megaways concept, and combined with the character and charm of the visuals and Gonzo himself it all makes for a truly memorable adventure.
